We love this place! Food is yummy and we haven’t tried anything we don’t like yet. We always order the Sweet and Vinegar Basa, Salted Fish Fried Rice, Salt and Pepper Squid, and Fried Green Beans w/ Garlic! I highly recommend this place!

Hands down my favorite Chinese restaurant in Calgary. By far!!!! Their corn crab soup is amazing. Sweet and sour pork, ginger chicken, special fried rice, deep fried crispy Basa! It's all amazing!

They only offered us medium spice and good thing too! We are both spice lovers and the spice level left our noses running, lips burning, and tongues tingling... in a good way! We tried the Dan Dan noodles, dried chili chicken w/o bones, and Szechuan HOT Wonton Soup. All were excellent and full of flavor and spice. Had lots to take home. Great service and overall experience.

Ordered the kung pao chicken, stir friend green beans, dumplings and salt and pepper squid. everything was delicious! Definitely one of the best Chinese restaurants in town, just beware of the spice 🌶 😁

Pretty exceptional food. We started off with an order of Spring Rolls ($3.50 for 2), which were some of the best I've had in a while: perfectly crisp and seasoned well. We also tried the pan fried pork dumplings, which were also really good (very similar to regular pork dumplings, but just a prettier shape). Next we tried the Ma Po Tofu ($12.98) and the Ginger Chicken ($13.98): so, so good! The Ma Po Tofu had just the right amount of heat, and the savoury pork married with floral Szechuan peppercorns and spicy bean sauce was absolutely delicious. The Ginger Chicken was by far some of the best in Calgary: a sticky, sweet and spicy sauce enveloping tender pieces of chicken - it doesn't get much better than that! The staff here were also very friendly, and service was great. I'll definitely be back soon!

Hangry In YYC
We went to Szechuan Restaurant as a team work lunch on Monday. The restaurant was relatively empty at noon except for a few tables.
1) Mild Green Beans - mild (delicious)
2) Large spicy bowled basa soup - mild (also delicious)
3) Beef brisket bowl - no spicy (okay)
4) kung pao chicken - mild (surprisngly really good with the roasted peanuts in it) - not pictured
The service was average (standard for a Chinese restaurant).
The decor was average (on the better end of some Chinese restaurants I've been to).
The food was delicious but we all agreed that we could have gone to medium. Mild had barely any spice to it.

Oh MK DO Nald's
High 5 for spiciness. I challenged myself to eat the spiciest flavor for their bean curd noodles and yes I failed to finish it. Extremely spicy. Next time I will try rice and spicy viand let us see if I can successfully see an empty plate. I love the Shanghai rolls and Wonton soup. They have complimentary Jasmine tea which is good cause I was little cold on a winter night. So far, will be coming back for another spicy meal :-) Don't forget to order bulk of tissue napkins for blowing of your runny nose haha.

A Saturday night at Szechuan for my dads birthday: My dad chose this place because he loves spicy and wanted to try authentic szechuan. Reservation for 6pm and the restaurant was moderately busy. They have the biggest menu I have ever seen, the choices are almost overwhelming. For the 8 of us we ordered dumplings, soup and 6 other dishes including the ultra spicy szechuan beef. Everything we ordered was delicious with the dumplings being the shining star. Myself I dislike asparagus but the asparagus dish they serve here I could eat everyday. The ginger beef was unlike any I have had before in a good way. The only knock on the night was that the food took about 45 minutes to come out so we were all getting a little hangry waiting for it. I definitely am coming back to Szechuan Restaurant, hopefully sooner than later.

We were told by some Chinese friends that if you wanted authentic cuisine then this place is a must. Five years after and we still hit up here for their food. We always order shrimp fried rice, fish in sauce and chilli boneless chicken (careful it's hot!). Food is always consistent andflavorful. This isn't your regular Chinese place in every strip mall, this is the real deal.

Unique place with unique and amazing food. You have to go once if you love Chinese food. Keep your mind open its a traditional kind of place, they are just doing their thing.

Great authentic Szechuan restaurant. I'm a regular at this restaurant because it's consistently very good. For those not familiar with Szechuan spice, it isn't so much the spice as it is the "ma" that comes from the Sichuan peppercorn that is used.
We typically order the cold spicy bean jelly curd, the eggplant with ground pork and chili pepper sauce, boiled sliced fish (or beef) in hot sauce, the chili pepper crispy chicken (with bone), and the smokey duck. We also make sure to always have some Tsing Tao beer with it all. :)
The staff is friendly and helpful, while the food is authentic and delicious. Definite recommend over self styled posh bistros serving the exact same dishes as every other resto-lounge following this very tired concept. Bring on ethnic food any day, I say!

I have been to this restaurant for more than 10 times just in 2015. I think it's really due for a review.
My husband and I ordered pretty much the same thing every time with traditional spicy. We even attempted extra spicy one time......Well, traditional spicy is enough!!!
Food: I am addicted to their noodle salad, so insanely flavourful- spicy, a little tangy, very garlicky. If all vegetarian food tastes like this, I can become a vegan!!!!!. Water-boilded fish, Dry spciy chicken pot, spicy pork kidney, fried noodles, noodle soup, tofu,.......Oooh, I can go on forever. Everything so far we have tried was absolutely delicious and addictive.
Ambiance: Not good, but I will trade ambiance for good food any day.
Service: The servers are nice even when they are very busy, but they usually don't have enough people to work so the attentiveness is a bit lacking. Nevertheless, I think the girls are trying their best under the circumstances. Also, they are very accommodating when I want to tweak a dish a little bit. Overall, I think the service is better than a lot of Chinese restaurants in Calgary.

Being a gal from the city of Chengdu, I'd give the authenticity of this place as per overseas standard a solid 4.5 out of 5! Food is always good (depending on what you order of course). Service is dependent on the server and the day. Portions are quite generous (again, dish dependent). This is a place I go to again and again!

The service was really fast and our server was polite, friendly, AND patient. She had great recommendations and took the time to make sure our tea was always refilled, in addition to asking us if the food was okay. The portions were quite large, with each shared plate costing around $12 - $15.

May not be the most authentic Sichuan restaurant in Canada, but good enough to be the best in Edmonton and Calgary.
Does this place look good and smell absolutely clean? No.
Are there enough waiters/waitresses to provide great service? No.
Do they offer abundant tasty and spicy Sichuan dishes? Damn Yes!
Their Sichuan Double Cooked Pork is my favorite. Enough said.

The fact is that there are few Calgary Szechuan restaurants with food as consistently good as this one. The service is not so good. The decor is a italian-chinese oddity. It is the food that keeps me returning.

This place is excellent. My favorite dish was probably the fried green beans but everything we ordered was great. I won't be able to eat "regular" Chinese food again because this is so much better.

This was my first time eating at Szechuan Restaurant and I was pleasantly surprised. I recommend the mushroom and sea cucumber soup, the tongue-numbing spicy beef with celery, the crispy salt & pepper eggplant, and the fried green beans. So delicious and no goopy sauces at all. A nice variation from typical Chinese food. Definitely going back for more soon.

Great!. The food was excellent, with great flavours, and came served hot and fresh straight from the kitchen without much wait. Since we aren't the types to enjoy overly spicy food, we steered away from those menu options, and I think the waitress asked the kitchen to tone things down a bit for us on one dish, which was still delicious.
Service was great as well, with two very pleasant and attentive waitresses serving us.
Funny how some of the complaints in other reviews were about the quality of ginger beef, given this restaurant serves more "authentic" instead of "westernized" Chinese cuisine. This really isn't the type of place you show up to order ginger beef at, and they can be forgiven for not making ginger beef as well as your favourite food court place, especially since the rest of the menu appears to be excellent.
All in all though, a great experience, and I'm looking forward to exploring the menu further.

Favorite Chinese restuarant. Love this place, very authentic, if you like spicy chinese food, you'll love this place. Kungpao chicken, and boiled fish are amazing!

Hands down my favorite restaurant in the city. If it's your first time, I would recommend a few items that are a must try.
Salt and pepper eggplant
Hot chili pepper chicken without bones
Hot and spicy fish fillet
Hot and sour soup
Hot and sour potato noodles
Can't go wrong ever at this place. LOVE!

A favorite of mine.. This place has become one of my favorite restaurants in the city. I love spicy food, and this hit the spot! The hot pepper chili chicken, the bean curd, and the hot sauce fish soup are my favorite dishes. The service isn't always the best, but the servers are friendly enough. If you are a fan of Szechuan cuisine and like extra spicy food, try this place. You won't be disappointed.

Tried this restaurant for the first time last night. The food is quite authentic. As I can't handle that much spice asked for mild but still found majority of the dishes to be quite spicy. Best dishes are the spicy chili chicken without bones and garlic hot green beans. The spicy Szechuan jelly curd was okay and Dan Dan noodles were mediocre. Will definitely come back and try different dishes.

If you want real Szechuan food-not north American style Chinese food-this is it!!! Yes service can be super slow and lacking but the restaurant is always full. Be prepared to wait for an incredible-and incredibly spicy-meal. Best chili pepper chicken I've had since living in China. Order without the bones. Spicy jelly bean curd, spicy green beans, sweet & sour soup were all amazing.

Every other chinese food restaurant is dead to me.... This place blew my mind in all the right ways. Layers of flavour in every dish. Service was extremely pleasant. If you're tired of "it all tastes the same" chinese food come here and be amazed.
Feb 04, 2013
Excellent!. The place may be kind of small with no parking. But the food is GREAT!!! Comes out fresh and spicy! Everything on the menu is a must try. I don't know what people are talking about service. When compared to other Chinese places, Szechuan Restaurant is above average. The Waitresses all speak English fluently. I'm definitely coming back here again!

Great food, bad service.. Food is authentic, almost always consistent. Service is a constant challenge though, do not expect being waited on beyond the bare minimum.

Hot Hot Hot. If you like spicy hot Szechuan, man do they ever have it. My wife and I hit this place last week and felt adventurous. We had the Beef tripe with pork blood and sliced beef, fried green beans and hot chili pepper chicken (with bones).
AND my wife asked for Extra Spicy, she said and I quote, "make it as hot as you can." Let me say this was the hottest meal I have ever eaten.
The real question is did I enjoy it. Yes and No. Yes the food and service was good but no because for ME the food was ultimately too hot as the heat kept building in my mouth...but we (meaning my wife) ordered it that way.
Also, one tip, don't order the Chili chicken with bones, order it without.
We are going back soon and I'll update this review with a taste of moderately spiced food.
One more note, the servers/owners are very friendly...also we were the only non-asians in the place, always a good sign.

I'd driven by Szechuan Restaurant a few times before, but was never sure whether it served real Chinese food, or just another place that specialized in ginger beef and lemon chicken. But after recommendations from fellow food blogger Shannon and my person
