The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (2022)

In 2018, I wrote this post to highlight the ten best Melbourne, Florida restaurants. So many more delicious spots have opened since then, that I decided to expand the list to thirty. Here’s an update with twenty new restaurants on the list for 2021!

I wanted to list in no particular order the thirty best Melbourne, Florida restaurants for people looking for a place to eat. When I say Melbourne, I mean from Palm Bay all the way up to Viera, and I’ve also included Melbourne Beach to Indian Harbor. I have another post here for the north side of Brevard County which features the ten best restaurants of Cocoa Beach, Titusville, Merritt Island and Satellite Beach here. If you are in the south area of Brevard County, you definitely need to check out these awesome restaurants.

The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (1)

Affordable Restaurants in Melbourne, Florida

This first part of the list contains the best Melbourne, Florida restaurants for dining on a budget. At these ten places, you can get a meal for $15 or less. Most of them are counter-service restaurants, so they are also good for when you are short on time. This section of the list contains some of the most iconic Melbourne restaurants, so you can still get the foodie experience here without breaking the bank!

Chez Quan’s

If you are in the mood for some creative cuisine, Chez Quan’s is my pick for that. They are located in an unassuming spot on Aurora Boulevard, but their food is anything but. Chez Quan’s is described as Asian-Latin fusion food and the menu has a variety of flavorful noodle and rice dishes. You can get stir fry’s and soups here, but I love trying things I don’t see elsewhere. I also enjoy the super spicy menu items as well! Don’t judge a book by its cover and make sure you try this place if you are a foodie!

The Burger Place

There are a lot of good places to get burgers in Melbourne, but none are as iconic as The Burger Place. Decorated like a 50’s diner, this burger stand has traditional milk shakes and burgers with any toppings you desire. I can’t resist upgrading mine to a bacon and blue cheese burger, but there are plenty of other variations and even a veggie burger for vegetarians. If you are seeking a trip back in time, one burger from this place will transport you!

Cafe Surfinista

For beachy vibes, Café Surfinista in Indialantic has it all! The inside feels like a coastal surf shack and it happens to be right by the actual beach too. They are open for breakfast and lunch with eats that include toasts, salad, smoothies and more. However, the Acai and Pitaya Bowls are what I keep going back for! This perfectly tropical fruit filled breakfast just hits the spot for me, before or after some fun in the sun.

Mustard’s Last Stand

It may seem odd to have a hot dog stand on a list of top restaurants, but Mustard’s Last Stand is a Melbourne classic. There are two locations and they both serve about 40 different kinds of hotdogs! The combinations are seriously endless and we love trying new ones. You can get fries with a variety of toppings as well. This is a picturesque place to go after a day at the beach for a simple meal with a twist.

Skeebo’s Rib Shack

For traditional barbecue you can’t get anywhere else, Skeebo’s Rib Shack in Palm Bay is a local favorite! Here you will find the most flavorful ribs, pulled pork, fried seafood and more. The Fried Catfish is especially delicious and they have all the southern sides to go with it, like Mac and cheese and Collard Greens. Though the restaurant itself is just a cozy, hidden spot, the food here packs a big flavor for lunch or dinner!

The Bearded Chef Food Truck and Break Room

When I added The Bearded Chef to this Best Melbourne Restaurants list, it was only a food truck, but now they have a standing location as well. You can now get the Bearded Chef’s mouthwatering food in Palm Bay for lunch, or at Intracoastal Brewing where the food truck is!

(Video) Melbourne, Florida | Best Things to do

The menu is always changing and I continue to be blown away by the flavors. In the past I have enjoyed their burgers, ramen, tacos and mac and cheese. With so many different things to order, I can always find something I am in the mood for and know it will be better than I can find most other places!

The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (3)

For a classic Florida brunch, Backwater checks all the boxes. This Downtown Melbourne spot is open daily for breakfast and lunch and offers fun southern dishes like a Fried Green Tomato Benedict and Gator and Okra Gumbo. There are even make-your-own pancakes tables with a grill that is fun for the whole family! Whether you want a simple breakfast, or an indulgent mimosa brunch, Backwater is my choice for a morning meal.

Cosmo’s Ice Cream Truck

If you want a unique dessert experience, look for Cosmo’s Ice Cream truck! This double decker bus drive around town stopping at different spots daily to serve delicious ice cream with your choice of mix ins! They have so many fun flavors to choose from like Nutella Ice Cream with white chocolate chips or Bubble Gum ice cream with Fruity Pebbles. There is also some refreshing sorbet and vegan ice cream, so everyone can enjoy this gigantic Ice Cream Truck.

Foxtail Coffee Co.

Melbourne is home to over half a dozen coffee shops, but Foxtail Coffee Co. is my new favorite. This coffee shop started in Orlando and now has two locations in Melbourne! You can find Foxtail Coffee Co. in Hotel Melby and their own shop on Babcock Street. Coffee and tea are the main attractions here, with a variety of handcrafted options from lattes to matcha tea. You can also get a bite, as they offer breakfast sandwiches and pastries. Whether you want breakfast or lunch or a refreshing drink and a relaxing ambiance, Foxtail Coffee Co. is worth stopping in.

Mel’s Tiki Café

For a while, there was no where to get poke bowls in Melbourne and I was frequently missing this Hawaiian favorite. Luckily, a few have popped up now, but the one I love the most is Mel’s Tiki Café. You can customize bowls here with whatever fish, base or fresh toppings you like for less than $15! If you aren’t a poke fan, that isn’t an issue either, as Mel’s Tiki Café has Hawaiian style breakfast and lunch all day. The Belgian waffles with coconut are a big hit, and you can’t miss the Tiki Bacon either!

Moderately Priced Restaurants in Melbourne, Florida

If you are looking for a traditional sit-down restaurant with some affordable meal options, this next part of the list is for you! Melbourne isn’t a traditional tourist town, so most places to eat here are cheaper than Orlando or Palm Beach already. You can expect to spend less than $25 per person when dining out, not including alcoholic drinks. Below, I have narrowed down the top ten best, mainly table-service restaurants in Melbourne, Florida that are sure to be worth going out to!

Umami Restaurant & Sushi Bar

Umami is without a doubt the best place to get sushi in Melbourne, Florida. This is saying a lot because there are upwards of thirty different sushi restaurants in this small area. You would not expect it from its strip mall location, but the atmosphere here is upscale and modern. What really sets Umami apart is the food and we have so far loved everything on the menu.

There are about twenty different sushi rolls and each one is uniquely curated by the chef. Many feature ingredients I had never thought of like fried sweet potato curls or raw Japanese scallops. The menu ranges from extremely well-done classic rolls to crazy creations for adventurous eaters. You also cannot go wrong with any of the tempura dishes, as they have mastered the crispiest and lightest tempura batter that I have found around here. Whether you are looking for a date night, a group dinner or an affordable lunch, Umami is a great spot for spectacular Japanese food.

El Ambia Cubano

For Cuban food in Melbourne, Florida, my favorite spot is El Ambia Cubano. There is nothing more relaxing than sitting here on the patio, listening to some salsa music while drinking a mojito. This cozy spot serves up a variety of Cuban dishes including ropa veja, Cuban sandwiches and plantains.

They also have some amazing, authentic, appetizers like yuca fita and papa rejellna. For dessert, you can’t go wrong with the flan and a cup of Cuban coffee. This downtown restaurant is located right across from Crane Creek and has an extremely charming island atmosphere. I find sitting outside to be the best followed by a walk around Downtown Melbourne to work off all that food!

Crydermans Barbecue

I found the Space Coast to be lacking in barbecue options compared to most of Florida, until Crydermans opened up. This is by far the best barbecue spot in the area. At first, they were only in Cocoa Village, but now there is a second location in Downtown Melbourne. They have also extended their hours, so you can usually get Crydermans for dinner now too!

All the different smoked meats are delicious here, but the brisket and sausage are my favorite. You can order platters or sandwiches to be enjoyed at the outdoor seating or ordered to go. Don’t skip on the sides either, as the baked beans and mac and cheese are the perfect accompaniments. As long as you like meat, this is definitely a must-visit Melbourne restaurant.

The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (5)

FM Pizza Oven

FM Pizza Oven is the first of two restaurants on this list that started out as food trucks. I used to always be on the lookout for FM Pizza Oven on a pizza kind of night, so I was so excited that they now have a location in Downtown EGAD. You can get their delectable pizza, as well as some oven-baked sides whenever you like now!

There is something for everyone at FM Pizza Oven, including gluten-free crust and vegetarian pizzas. I love their tomato sauce, but the white pizza and barbecue pizza can make it hard to decide. The dining room is located in a historic bank and it has already become such a great community spot. You can even check out their next-door speakeasy for some impressive cocktails before or after your meal.

Coastal Crab Company

No matter what seafood you are craving, you will find it Coastal Crab Company! This is the only place I have found blue crab and you get it to cook yourself or cooked for order. They also offer steamer pots with all sorts of shellfish, as well as entrees like Cajun Shrimp and Grits and Garlic Seared Scallops. It’s a seafood lover’s dream here with everything flavored to perfection!

Paisley’s Vegan Kitchen

The restaurants of Melbourne, Florida are not the most vegetarian friendly compared to other Florida spots, but you can count on Paisley’s Vegan Kitchen for an amazing meal with out. Herbivores and carnivores alike can enjoy the plant-based comfort food they serve here. I love the sandwiches, including the Mushroom French Dip and the Falafel Waffle Pita. However, they also offer tacos, salads and even vegan pasta! Between this and sides of buffalo cauliflower and cheesy “bacon” ranch bites, you will not be missing meat here!

The Mansion

You cannot talk about the best Melbourne, Florida restaurants without mentioning The Mansion, as it has become a local staple in the last decade. They serve everything from sandwiches to tacos to filet mignon, so there’s something on the menu for whatever you are craving. You can sit indoors, outdoors under a covered awning, and on the rooftop, which is the best spot in my opinion.

Another thing I love about the Mansion is that they have over 60 beers on tap and they are always changing the selection! This is not surprising considering there is also an extensive Cellar where you can shop through hundreds of different kinds of wines and liquor. The Mansion is a community gathering spot that every local has been to dozens of times. If you are visiting the area, come here to experience the eccentric beachy vibe of the Space Coast.

Mangetsu is a Korean BBQ spot in Downtown Melbourne that I have loved for years, however, it has really shined since moving to the new building. It is pretty much the only place around where you can get Korean options like Bibimbap and Kimchi Fried Rice. They even have Korean Barbecue that you can cook at the table!

Though they have Japanese and Thai food here, I think the Korean food is what they do best. However, I appreciate the vast menu for dining here, as it guarantees that there is something for everyone to enjoy!

Hemingway’s Tavern

Tucked away in The Oaks is Hemingway’s Tavern where you can get a taste of Key West in Melbourne, Florida! This tropical restaurant has Cuban and Caribbean food with a Florida twist. Their brunch is legendary with one of the best unlimited mimosas deals and creative Eggs Benedict dishes. It’s also a fun spot for date night, or even a casual Cuban breakfast at their walk-up Cafecito window! With a lovely patio and plenty of tropical drinks, this is definitely a spot to visit on vacation.

Cedar’s Café

Cedar’s Café specializes in Lebanese food, but they often push the envelope in a variety of ways. You wouldn’t expect it from a Lebanese spot, but it has won the award for the Best James Beard Blended Burger three times in a row. Every year, they craft a burger made of beef and mushrooms and top it with unimaginable ingredients for an incredible creation.

Burger Week aside, they have perfected classics like tabbouleh, gyros, and kebabs. I am often going back for their gyros and never seem to be disappointed here. This is a tiny restaurant, so it can be good to make a reservation, as it is the best local place for Greek and Lebanese favorites.

The Cottage Irish Pub

Another restaurant in EGAD that you have to visit is The Cottage. Though some might complain about Meg O’Malley’s not being on my Best Melbourne, Florida restaurants list, I prefer the atmosphere at The Cottage. It is an Irish Pub with plenty of outdoor and indoor seating and very frequent live music.

We have tried most of the menu here, but our usual go-to’s are usually the Cottage Pie and the Guinness Beef Stew. If the Florida weather is just too warm for that, I also love the burgers and Irish Nachos (basically Loaded Fries). Not only is the food top notch, but it is such a fun place to be while enjoying a cold beer with friends.

The Best Melbourne, FL Restaurants to Splurge At

This last section of the list contains the best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for a special occasion. These are the places I go for birthday meals, fancy date nights or celebratory experiences. Though you don’t need to splurge at one of these places to get the full Melbourne experience, I recommend trying at least one if you can while visiting! On average, it will cost at least $25 per person to dine at the next places, but there are often happy hour or lunch deals as well. Here are the final ten best Melbourne, Florida restaurants.

Crush Eleven

Crush Eleven is an amazing spot that has done wonders for the area. The atmosphere has a refined elegance, and though I find it best for date nights, they welcome casual visitors. Everything on the menu is carefully crafted and beautifully presented. This goes for the unique cocktails made with in house infused liquors to the inventive appetizers, such as the sweet and savory pierogi trio. This is one of the more expensive restaurants on the list, but it is worth the splurge. We have loved having Crush Eleven in Downtown Melbourne so that we can go for cocktails and small plates, or a chic meal. They now offer lunch and brunch, so you have many opportunities to experience a wonderful meal here.

Yellow Dog Cafe

You will find Yellow Dog Café beautifully situated on the river making for a very romantic setting. Andrew and I have dined here for a couple of special occasions and are always impressed. The menu features seafood, as well as French inspired cuisine. If you are looking for a multi-course meal than this is a great spot. However, you can easily come here for a simple salad or sandwich lunch as well though! Sitting by the river, you can really appreciate the nature of the area and we always find it to be a relaxing experience.

(Video) Top 5 Things To Do in Vero Beach, FL

Djon’s Village Market

For a rooftop meal by the beach, Djon’s Village Market is the new destination to go. I have been to this spot for both brunch and dinner and have only had amazing experiences. They serve a variety of seafood and farmhouse style meals, including an entire vegan section. This goes along great with the view and the specialty cocktail menu! Though this restaurant is good for casual or special occasions, there is also Djon’s Steak and Lobster House down the street for a traditional, fancy surf and turf meal.

The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (8)

Ocean 302

Of the restaurants in Melbourne Beach, Ocean 302 is the one to usually satisfy my foodie cravings. Foodie is probably the best way to describe it, as saying they just serve American cuisine would be a sever understatement. Ocean 302 has pizzas, sandwiches, steak and seafood on the menu all served in so many unique ways. We tend to come here for a casual lunch or dinner, but you can make it a splurge meal if you want to order one of the dry aged steaks. They are always coming out with new and exciting dishes being added at Ocean 302, in addition to the inventive cocktails and many beer and wine options.

Cafe Coconut Cove

Another Melbourne Beach spot worth the drive down south for is Café Coconut Cove. This waterfront restaurant is surprisingly a classic German eatery with a variety of elevated European cuisine. Whether you want a simple dish of Schnitzel or Sausage or a more striking dinner of Spic Rubbed Beef Shoulder, this spot impresses. It may seem a little quirky for a date night meal by the beach, but you won’t find an experience like it anywhere else!

Scott’s On Fifth

For an elegant dinner beachside, Scott’s on Fifth has been the local’s choice for years. They offer a limited gourmet menu that changes frequently, but usually appeals to a broad audience. Entrees like Lobster Ravioli and Dijon Rack of Lamb are prepared with just the right mix of traditional and imaginative. It’s a place that will appeal to older and younger adult crowds and can bring them all together with an extensive wine list and delectable dessert options as well.

Frigates Waterfront Bar & Grill

Probably my new favorite restaurant on this list is Frigate’s, the new riverfront restaurant in Melbourne. This spot has the nicest atmosphere I have seen with so many colorful plants and often views of dolphins in the marina! Of course, this is another seafood spot, but the options are quite impressive. You can get a variety of fish cooked and topped any way you want, as well a variety of sushi! There are also salads, sandwiches and chargrilled steaks, but with the atmosphere and the plethora of fish options, I can’t resist a tropical meal here.

The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants for 2022 - The Florida Travel Girl (9)

Trend Kitchen

For a romantic dinner in an intimate setting, Trend Kitchen is one of the best places splurge at. They are known for some of the most elaborate food in town, with options like Octopus Carpaccio and Bone Marrow Escargot. Don’t let those options scare you away though, because what they do best is steak and seafood. No matter what you get, make sure to order a side of Truffle Mac and Cheese for the table as well, because it is all the savory deliciousness you can imagine.

28 North Gastropub

On the northern end of Melbourne in the Avenues of Viera, 28 North Gastropub serves up all sorts of elevated Southern and Pub Style dishes. Everything I have ordered here is absolutely savory from the Scallops & Grits to the Dry Aged Meatloaf. If you like sharing, it’s also a fun place to order a bunch of appetizers and sides. They have the best charcuterie board around in my opinion! With such well crafted drinks and dishes, many with exotic ingredients, it is definitely one of the more expensive restaurants in Melbourne, Florida. However, I have always had a worthwhile meal here for dinner and brunch.

Ember & Oak

The one restaurant I have not been able to get enough of since it opened is We have tried everything from charcuterie to steakhouse boards to gourmet burgers and have found all of it to be extremely impressive! The whole concept of the restaurant is to have a shared dining experience, so many meals come in board form with an entrée and multiple side dishes. If the food didn’t already put it over top, the cocktails are equally as amazing and there is even a self-serve wine room! With all sorts of unique dishes for dinner or brunch, this is one of my absolute favorite places to eat in Downtown Melbourne.

Know Before You Go: The Best Melbourne, Florida Restaurants

I had a hard time picking which restaurants to include, but I know you can’t go wrong with a single option on this list. As of Spring 2021, these are the best Melbourne Florida restaurants, however, I plan to update this list regularly. For more information, click on the name of each restaurant above and many include a full review I have done. Here’s a few things to keep in mind before eating out in Melbourne.

  • It is customary to tip at least 15% in Melbourne and most restaurants do not include this in the final bill, unless you have a large party.
  • Most restaurants do not require reservations, with the exceptions of holidays or big parties. For some of the splurge restaurants, it may be smart to call ahead just in case.
  • The best way to save money in Melbourne when going out to eat, is to go during Happy Hour or for lunch. There are not a lot of early bird specials here.
  • Most restaurants on this list are pretty casual, and you can wear shorts to all of them. However for the upscale restaurants, I would err on the dress to impress side.
  • Parking is plentiful in Melbourne, with the exception of Downtown Melbourne on weekend nights. If you can’t find parking near the restaurant, there is usually some on Melbourne Ave. Valet is rare in Melbourne, Florida.
  • Support Black-Owned Restaurants! Black-Owned restaurants included in this list are: Skeebo’s Rib Shack, Cosmo’s Ice Cream and Coastal Crab Company.

Do you agree that these are the best Melbourne, Florida restaurants? Let me know in the comments! For more tips on visiting Melbourne, check out my Space Coast Travel Guide.
